10 Cheap Kitchen Finds That Make Dinner Less Annoying

There are approximately 47 things about making dinner that annoy me, and actually cooking the food is only about six of them. It's chopping the onion. Finding the measuring spoon. Breaking up the ground beef. Cleaning the air fryer. And somehow dirtying half the kitchen to make a meal everyone will finish in nine minutes. So no, these aren't fancy kitchen essentials. They're the cheap little things that solve very specific annoyances β€” which, frankly, is my favorite kind of purchase.

1. Ground Beef Meat Chopper

You know that thing where you're standing over a frying pan aggressively attacking a pound of ground beef with the edge of a spatula? Apparently we didn't have to live like this. A meat chopper breaks ground beef apart quickly while it cooks, and it's especially handy for taco meat, spaghetti sauce, sloppy joes and all the other meals we make because once again there is ground beef in the refrigerator and people expect dinner. Why I like it: It's cheap, takes up almost no room, and solves an oddly specific problem.

If you're still aggressively attacking ground beef with the edge of a spatula, apparently we don't have to live like this. πŸ˜‚ This little thing breaks it up fast, costs less than $10, and is one of those ridiculously simple kitchen gadgets that just makes sense.

2. Vegetable & Onion Chopper

I am perfectly capable of chopping an onion. Do I want to? Absolutely not. Throw the vegetables in, push down, and suddenly you have a container full of evenly chopped onions or peppers without standing at a cutting board for ten minutes. This would be especially handy for taco night, fajitas, soups, meal prep and basically anything involving onions. Why I like it: Less chopping, less mess, and fewer opportunities to cry over an onion before dinner has even started.

This is the kind of kitchen gadget that looks unnecessary until you use it once. πŸ˜‚ Toss in your onions, peppers, potatoes or veggies, push down, and you're done. No standing at the cutting board chopping everything into 900 tiny pieces. This one earns its cabinet space.

3. Clip-On Pot Strainer

Why does a colander need to occupy approximately 17% of a kitchen cabinet? This little strainer clips directly onto the side of your pot so you can drain pasta, potatoes or vegetables without transferring everything into another giant dish. That's it. That's the whole invention. And I'm annoyed I didn't think of it. Why I like it: Tiny to store, easy to use and one less giant thing to wash.

4. Silicone Air Fryer Liners

I love the air fryer. I do not love scrubbing whatever has permanently attached itself to the bottom of the air fryer basket. These reusable silicone liners catch the grease, crumbs and general aftermath so cleanup is considerably less offensive. Why I like them: If an inexpensive piece of silicone means I don't have to soak and scrub something after dinner, I'm listening.

Anything that gets me out of scrubbing the air fryer gets a yes from me.

5. Oil Sprayer

If you have an air fryer, this one makes a lot of sense. Fill it with your own cooking oil and give food a light, even spray instead of accidentally dumping half the bottle of olive oil onto three potatoes. It's also handy for roasting vegetables, salads, grilling and greasing pans. Why I like it: Better control, less oil and one of those things you'll probably use way more often than you expect.

Because apparently β€œjust drizzle a little oil” means accidentally dumping half the bottle onto three potatoes. πŸ˜‚ This gives you a light, even spray for the air fryer, roasted veggies, salads and pans without going completely rogue with the olive oil.

6. Mini Silicone Spatulas

Is scraping the last bit of peanut butter, mayo, frosting or sauce out of a container going to dramatically improve my life? No. Does it make me disproportionately happy? Yes. Mini spatulas get into jars and small containers where a regular spatula is obnoxiously large. Why I like them: They're cheap, useful and I get irrationally irritated throwing away a jar that clearly still contains two tablespoons of something.

Absolutely. πŸ˜‚ These little spatulas get into all the places a regular spatula can't, and they're weirdly useful.

7. Magnetic Measuring Spoons

Somewhere in my kitchen is the measuring spoon I need. Is it attached to the other measuring spoons? Of course not. Magnetic measuring spoons snap together for storage but pull apart individually when you need one β€” no giant ring of spoons dangling into the bowl while you're trying to measure vanilla. Why I like them: They stay together without actually being permanently attached together. Somebody finally understood the assignment.

Magnetic Measuring Spoons

Measuring spoons that actually stay together? Revolutionary. πŸ˜‚ These are magnetic so they stack neatly instead of disappearing into the utensil drawer, and the narrow ends actually fit inside spice jars. Plus, the little leveler means I can pretend I'm measuring things properly for once.

8. Kitchen Shears

I spent way too many years believing everything in the kitchen needed to be cut with a knife. Kitchen scissors are faster for way more things than they have any right to be. Herbs? Snip. Green onions? Snip. Pizza? Honestly... snip. Opening the package of chicken that refuses to cooperate while your hands are already disgusting? SNIP. Why I like them: Sometimes scissors are simply the superior knife.

One pair for the kitchen and one pair for wherever the first pair disappears to. πŸ˜‚ Kitchen shears are one of those boring little things I reach for constantlyβ€”for opening packages, cutting herbs, trimming meat and basically anything I don't feel like getting a knife and cutting board out for.

9. Silicone Utensil Rest

This might be the least exciting item on this list. It also might be one of the ones you use the most. Instead of putting your sauce-covered spoon directly on the counter β€” or balancing it precariously across the pot like you're competing on a cooking show β€” put it here. Some versions hold several utensils at once and catch the drips underneath. Why I like it: My stovetop has enough going on. It doesn't also need to be covered in spaghetti sauce.

10. Microwave Splatter Cover

This product exists because apparently putting a bowl of spaghetti sauce into the microwave uncovered is something I will continue doing despite knowing exactly what happens next. Put the cover over your plate before reheating and let it catch the explosion instead of the entire inside of the microwave. Why I like it: Washing one microwave cover is considerably easier than wiping marinara off the ceiling of a microwave.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but wiping exploded spaghetti sauce off the ceiling of the microwave is not a required part of adulthood. πŸ˜‚ Pop this over your plate before reheating leftovers and it catches the mess for you. Even better if it's collapsible, because I don't need another giant plastic thing taking over my kitchen.

Cheap Things > Complicated Things

I'm increasingly convinced that the best kitchen products aren't the expensive appliances with 37 settings. They're the cheap little things that fix one tiny problem you've been unnecessarily dealing with for years. If it saves me five minutes, prevents another dish from entering the sink, or makes getting dinner on the table slightly less irritating? I'll take it. And if you've found one of those ridiculously simple kitchen products that makes you wonder how you lived without it, I want to know about it β€” because apparently I'm collecting them now.
